Two of our Year 10 students have recently competed in the next round of the FutureChef competition, after winning the school heat earlier in the term.

FutureChef is a schools-based programme across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
that supports the development of key life skills whilst inspiring young people to pursue an exciting career within the world of hospitality.

Kayce-Rose and Diana, both from Year 10, won the earlier school heat, and then went on to compete against each other for a place in the regional finals. Diana chose to make a hearty soup, and Kayce cooked a pasta dish.

Both students performed excellently, and Kayce was chosen as the winner on this occasion.

Mr Boal said:

“Both Diana and Kacey worked diligently and produced some amazing food. Diana’s soup was warm and hearty and as it was made with so few ingredients it had a great depth of flavour. Kayce’s pasta was an unusual choice of flavours that worked very well together, the pasta was perfectly cooked and the lemon contrasted with the Feta Cheese. The choice of beetroot for the base flavour was a brave one, but it added colour and a rich flavour.”

“Now the hard work starts on planning a Michelin star worthy meal for the regional final, but I am confident that Kayce will rise to the challenge and she will excel showing off her culinary skills!”

Jack Bond, Head Chef at Cottage in the Wood, was in school to help judge the competition. He will also work with the winner going through to the next stage. He said:

“The next challenge in the competition is the regional final. It gets tougher and Kayce will produce a main course and dessert for 2 under £10. But with some practice and seeing the skills she already has, I am sure she will produce something great. The FutureChef competition is a great opportunity for everyone to express themselves and their food passion. I had the very hard job of judging the last heat which saw Diana and Kayce produce some delicious food.”

“Each one was a triumph in their own right and both of them should be incredibly proud of themselves, I thought each dish had different points of interest, Diana’s dish had a lovely consistency and she got the maximum amount of flavour out of all the ingredients she used. It was silky smooth and very moreish, I would eat that dish over and over.”

“Kayce produced a very vibrant dish and showed a wide range of skills, making a very tasty sweet beetroot sauce that had lovely sourness from the feta cheese. The sauce had a good consistency to it that coated the pasta well.”

Good Luck to Kayce-Rose who will now compete in the next round!
